Opportunity Awaits: Expanding Independent Living Skills for Adults With IDD
For individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), developing independent living skills can be a pivotal step toward self-reliance and a fulfilling life. At RISE Services, Inc. Missouri, we believe that every person deserves encouragement and resources while they grow. At our St. Louis Opportunity Centers, we offer flexible supports that promote confidence and community engagement as individuals pursue their personal goals.
What Are Independent Living Skills?
Independent living skills refer to the abilities needed to manage daily life with confidence. These skills include everything from cooking, cleaning, and managing money to communicating well and traveling safely around the community.
For adults with IDD, these skills increase autonomy and also open doors to meaningful opportunities. This growth can look different for each individual. It can mean more successful interactions with others, living in residential homes of their choice, or participating in employment. No matter the skill, learning something new can boost self-esteem, build social connection, and lead to improved well-being.
Opportunity Centers: Personalized Paths to Growth
At RISE Services, Inc. Missouri, our Opportunity Centers provide a broad spectrum of supports for adults with IDD. Through individualized plans developed by our behavior therapists, we help adults learn social skills, practice teamwork, and make lasting connections.
Our programs offer half-day or full-day options, Monday through Friday. Activities are designed with input from those we support and can include:
- Recreational opportunities that make learning fun
- Physical education to support health
- Social skills training for daily interactions
- Pre-employment preparation for those interested in joining the workforce
- Community living skill-building, like navigating public transit or managing schedules
- Counseling and therapy for additional support
Our Day Support Programs are fun and engaging while staying true to our mission.
Pre-Employment Training: Bridging the Gap to the Workforce
Many adults with IDD are eager to enter the workforce. We provide hands-on job training and support. Partnering with local employers and agencies, we create pathways to employment by:
- Providing job shadowing and real-world work experiences
- Offering assessments to align interests with careers
- Teaching vital soft skills like communication, etiquette, and teamwork
- Coordinating transportation planning and access to benefits counseling
Along with learning these practical skills, each participant can set their own goals and explore their own interests and strengths.
